President Mahama Calls for Solidarity in Mourning: “We Will Support Their Children”

President John Mahama has urged Ghanaians to honour the memory of the eight victims of the 6 August helicopter crash by embracing unity, compassion and the vision they shared for a stronger Ghana.

Speaking at the state funeral on Friday (15 August), the President said the tragedy’s impact could not be explained away by technical reports alone. “A loss of this magnitude and in this manner will never make sense to the grieving heart,” he noted.

He appealed to citizens to turn grief into action — by fostering peace in their communities and ensuring that the victims’ children are supported, not forgotten.

“Let us also leave our eight comrades today with a promise that their children will not be alone and that they’ve got us, and we’ll always be there to share,” he said.

The President paid tribute to the courage and dignity of the bereaved families and thanked the Ghana Armed Forces, emergency services, religious leaders, traditional authorities, civil society, the diplomatic corps and foreign heads of state for their solidarity.

“This solidarity affirms the strength of our national and international spirit,” he said, adding that he hoped the funeral would mark “a new dawn” for Ghana as the Almighty heals the nation.

“You will always be in our hearts. You will always be remembered, and we will always revere your memory,” the President concluded.
