VGMA not meant for only secular musicians – Diana Hamilton
Gospel artiste Diana Hamilton has said her huge win over the weekend at the 2021 edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) as the overall Artiste of the Year shows clearly that, the awards scheme is not designed to celebrate only secular musicians.
To her, it is essential to recognize the VGMA as a platform to spread the gospel and win souls for God.
“On the night, there was a gentleman who sat in front of me and that was the first time he heard the song ‘Adom.’ We thought Adom had done what it could but if not for anything, we won a soul, and just by doing VGMA, all the figures are going up and that’s our way of proclaiming the gospel. It is a corporate scheme; it’s not a secular scheme. It is a scheme that is awarding everybody in their field of work and so gospel deserves to be there,” she said in an interview on Joy News.
Diana Hamilton became the second female artiste to win the Artiste of the Year after Ebony Reigns won posthumously in 2018.
She also picked up three other awards on the night; Vodafone Most Popular Song of the Year, Gospel Artiste of the Year and Gospel Song of the Year.
KiDi won EP of the Year, Afrobeats/Afropop Artiste of the Year, Afrobeats/Afropop Song of the Year and Highlife Song of the Year.
Other winners were Kuami Eugene who won Highlife Artiste of the Year; Adina who also had an amazing night winning Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Reggae/Dancehall Song of the Year; Medikal won Best Hiphop/Hiplife Artiste of the Year, Eno Barony won Rapper of the Year with Mr Drew taking home New Artiste of the Year.
There were performances from KiDi, Adina, Okyeame Kwame, Yaw Tog, Efya, Kwesi Arthur among others as well as a tribute to Hiplife artiste Castro who disappeared nearly seven years ago.
