Gender Minister Hints at School Feeding Fee Hike to GHC5 Amid Economic Recovery

The Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has indicated that the current feeding fee for basic school pupils under the Ghana School Feeding Programme could increase from GHC2 to GHC5 per child if the economy continues to improve.

Speaking to the media after visiting some schools in Accra on Thursday, September 4, 2025, the Minister explained that the ministry has been advocating for a review of the fee to enable caterers to provide nutritious meals for pupils.

“When you look at it per head, which is GHC2.00, I have even wished that we get GHC10 per student. We were pushing for GHC5 per person, then we got GHC2, as per the negotiation. We hope that as the economy progresses, we will receive the GHC5 per student,” she said.

Dr. Lartey added that her ministry has already organized training programs for caterers to prepare them for the potential adjustment.

“Remember, we do not want to be giving excuses. We want to make sure caterers are ready to deliver once the increment comes through,” she stressed.

The Minister’s remarks come amid growing concerns about the adequacy of the current GHC2 allocation, with many stakeholders calling for an upward review to reflect the rising cost of food items.
