Police chase 53 headmasters …over corruption in school feeding programme

53 Senior High Schools (SHS) all in the Ashanti Region have been found to have been involved in corrupt practices in the implementation of the Ghana School Feeding Programme under the Free SHS Policy therefore; the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has begun investigations into the suspected corruption.

The said schools are suspected to have exchanged the free supplied food for cash. Details however remain scanty.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially written to the its directorate in the Ashanti Region to officially notify the heads of the affected schools to avail themselves for the police investigations.

The GES wrote and directed that all the affected heads of schools should co-operate with the police investigations after it received as letter from the CID, officially informing the Service of the ongoing investigations.

The letter, written on April 28, 2001 and signed by the GES Deputy Director General, Anthony Boateng, on behalf of the Director-General read: “management has received a letter from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, which indicates that they are investigating some issues related to the supply of food items to some of the senior high schools in your region.

“You are hereby directed to request the respective District Directors of Education to release the headmaster/mistress or the assistants, domestic bursars, accountants and storekeepers of the attached list of schools to the CID for investigations, if requested.

“It will be appreciated if your office could co-operate and collaborate fully with the CID in carrying out the investigations,” the letter added.

The said 53 schools are Adu Gyamfi SHS, Afia Kobi Ampen Girls’ SHS, Amoniampong SHS, Anglican SHS Kumasi, Asentaman SHS, Atwima Kwanwoma SHS, Chirst the King  Catholic SHS Obuasi, Collins SHCS, Denyaseman Catholic SHS, Dompoase SHS, Ejisu SHS, Ejura Anglican SHS, Fomina TI Ahmadiyya SHS, Jachie Pramso SHS, JAcubu SHTS, Juaben SHS, Juaso SHTS, KNUST SHS, Kofi Adjei SHTS, Konongo SHTS, Konongo Odumase SHS, Kumasi Adacemy, Kumasi Girls’ SHS, Kumasi Technica Institute, Kumasi Wesley Girls SHS, Mansoman SHS, Mpasatia SHS, Obuasi SHTS, Ofoase Kooben SHS, Okonfo Anokye SHS, Opoku Ware SHS, Oppong Memorial SHS, Osei Kyeretwie SHS, Osei Tutu SHS, Otunfuo Osei Tutu II College, Owerrima SHS, Prempeh College, SDA SHS Agona, SDA SHS Bekwai, Serwaah Nyarko Girls’ SHS, Simms SCHS, St. Jerome SHS, St. Joseph Seminary and SHS Mampong, St. Joseph SHS Ahwiren, St. Louis SHS Kumasi, TI Ahmadiya, Toase SHS, Wesley SHS Bekwai, Wesley SHS Konongo, Yaa Asantewaa Girls’ SHS, Aduman High School, Mankranso SHS, Tepa SHS and Beposo SHS.
