‘W’akyi Gu Hɔ’: Bawumia Mocks NDC Over Broken Promises

‘W’akyi gu hɔ’, a popular Twi idiomatic phrase meaning “your back is left bare,” which has become a cliché in Ghanaian politico-social circles, found its way into a speech by NPP flag bearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as he taunted the Mahama-led NDC government over several unfulfilled election promises.
Speaking at the NPP national Thanksgiving service at the FD Walker Temple of The Church of Pentecost in Sunyani, on Sunday, Dr Bawumia said: “Today we have a saying, ‘a few moments later.’
“Everything you say is captured on the internet. If you come and fail to do it, it will be played back to remind you.” He said the NDC, while in opposition, made a lot of promises but now “mo akyi agu hɔ.”
He noted that promises made to win power must “be promises we can keep because time tests every promise.” To that end, he stated: “Now as 2028 approaches, NPP are going with ideas, costed ideas, practical ideas, workable ideas not just making promises to Ghanaians for the sake of it. And that is the lesson for all Ghanaians and political parties.”
NDC claims challenged
Dr Bawumia also said promises made to win power must be promises that can be kept, because “time tests every promise.” He challenged the NDC government’s claims of economic stability, asking where that stability is, since households still face rising rent, fuel, utility and transport costs.
He argued that economic indicators are meaningless if ordinary people struggle to meet basic needs, and called for a “pocket economy” that delivers real relief, rather than a “paper economy” of favourable statistics.
The former Vice President questioned the NDC’s 24-hour economy policy, calling it campaign propaganda and arguing that Ghanaians need clarity and results, not political assurances.
