NPP Heads to Kumasi Saturday for High-Stakes National Officers Election; Polls to Test Party’s Appetite for Change

It’s a big weekend for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), which is gathering in Kumasi to elect national officers in a contest that will shape its direction for the 2028 elections.

At the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, 47 aspirants will vie for nine positions after one withdrawal, with the Electoral Commission conducting the polls.

The Elections Committee says the final delegates’ register is ready, online verification is available, and proxy voting will be allowed under a published framework.

In the chairmanship race, four candidates are contesting: John Boadu, Sammy Crabbe, Paul Afoko, and Boakye Agyarko.

The General Secretary race features Sylvester Tetteh, Eugene Boakye Antwi, incumbent Justin Kodua Frimpong, and Dr Charles Dwamena.

Thirteen aspirants are vying for three Vice-Chairperson slots.

Other positions up for contest include National Organiser, Treasurer, Women’s Organiser, Youth Organiser, Nasara Coordinator, and Communications Director.

Beyond the elections, delegates will consider constitutional amendments, including expanding the number of vice-chairperson positions from three to six, granting voting rights to former executives and MPs, and creating a National Christian Wing.

The conference starts at 9 a.m., with delegates arriving on Friday.

With 47 aspirants, multiple tight races, and far-reaching reforms at stake, Kumasi will test the NPP’s unity, organisation, and appetite for change ahead of the next general election.
