Ayawaso East by-election: Voting ends, counting underway

Voting has closed in the Ayawaso East by-election, conducted across 113 polling stations to elect a new Member of Parliament for the constituency.

Ballots are now being sorted and counted at the various polling centres, as party agents, observers and supporters await the outcome of what has been widely described as a peaceful contest.

More than 40,000 registered voters were expected to take part in the exercise to fill the vacancy created by the death of the sitting MP, Mahama Naser Toure, who passed away in January 2026.

The by-election was generally marked by a low voter turnout, with several polling stations recording sparse queues throughout the day.

The contest featured Baba Jamal of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Baba Ali of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the main contenders. Also on the ballot were Umaru Sanda Muhammed, an Independent candidate who defected from the ruling NDC, Ibrahim Iddrisu and David Kunor.

A recent survey by Global InfoAnalytics projected a decisive victory for Baba Jamal, forecasting a 75 per cent share of the vote. The final results, however, will determine whether that prediction holds.
