Keep your campaign promise, ease port charges — Ghanaians in Belgium tell President Mahama
President of the Ghana Council in Belgium, Kwaku Boamah Acheampong, has renewed calls on government to address the high import duties charged at Ghana’s ports.
He urged the Mahama-led administration to honour its campaign pledge to rationalise port fees to ease the burden on importers and boost trade.
“The major concern for Ghanaians in diaspora is the excessive duties…the President promised during the campaign tour that the new NDC government is going to work on it, so please take this issue to Cabinet for us,” he said when the Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang met with the Ghanaian community in Belgium.
Mr. Boamah also raised concerns about the ban on certain Ghanaian food exports to the European market due to excessive pesticide use.
He called on government to take swift action to regulate pesticide application and ensure compliance with international standards to regain access to the European market.
“These vegetables and other food stuffs are not allowed in the European market. They are not allowed because they have too much pesticides. And this is blocking a big market for our agriculture development,” he stressed.
