No funerals in Asanteman from 1 September – Otumfuo Osei Tutu II orders

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has placed a temporary ban on all funeral activities across the Asante Kingdom from 1 September 2025.

The suspension will remain in force until the final burial rites of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, are concluded.

Her burial is scheduled between 14 and 18 September.

In announcing the directive, the Asantehene’s spokesperson, Otumfuo Kyeame Baffour Kantankrankyi, said the decision was necessary to enable the King and the people of Asanteman to fully concentrate on honouring the late Queen Mother.

The Asantehene officially notified the Asanteman Council of Nana Konadu Yiadom III’s passing on 11 August. Since then, the council has issued guidelines for the one-week observation, including a call for modest dress.

High heels, long artificial nails and what it described as “indecent clothing” will not be permitted during the ceremonies.

The mourning period is expected to attract dignitaries, chiefs and mourners from across Ghana and abroad.

Authorities say security will be tight around the Manhyia Palace, where the rites will highlight the Ashanti Kingdom’s rich cultural heritage.
