Ghana, Kyrgyzstan Explore Cooperation in Formalising Gold Trade

Ghana’s progress in formalising the gold trading sector and opportunities for cooperation between Ghana and Kyrgyzstan in gold mining, trading, technical expertise, and investment dominated an engagement between the two countries.
The meeting was held between the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, and a delegation from the Kyrgyz Republic led by its Foreign Affairs Minister, Jeenbek Kulubayev.
The delegation was accompanied by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
Mr Gyamfi briefed the delegation on GoldBod’s mandate and reforms, including efforts to curb gold smuggling and leakages, increase gold purchases from the artisanal and small-scale mining sector, and promote local refining and value addition.
The Kyrgyz delegation expressed interest in learning from Ghana’s experience. Mr Ablakwa called for a formal framework agreement to facilitate technical exchanges and deepen bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
