Counterfeit diapers from Nigeria seized and destroyed in Kumasi

National Security has seized and destroyed a consignment of counterfeit diapers smuggled from Nigeria and branded under the name of a Ghanaian company.

The products were intercepted at Asafo in Kumasi while being offloaded under the interchange.

Officials say port duty documents covering the goods were also found to be fake.

The Food and Drugs Authority later confirmed the diapers were unsafe for public use. Acting on its advice, National Security supervised their disposal at the Medical Waste Treatment Plant operated by Zoomlion on 20 August 2025.

Ashanti Regional Deputy Security Coordinator, Alhaji Tapsoba Alhassan, told reporters that no importer has so far come forward to claim ownership of the seized items.

“Through our investigations no one has come forward to claim ownership, meaning it is fake. We are particularly worried about the unpaid duties and the fact that we can’t find the trucks because they hired another to bring the goods here,” he said.

He added that informants have identified one Nigerian suspect linked to the operation, but said his office was focusing on tracking down the Ghanaian accomplices.

National Security confirmed that this was the second seizure of counterfeit diapers in the region within the past three weeks.
