Otumfuo’s Mediation in Bawku Conflict: Nayiri Ready to Make Concessions – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that the Nayiri, Naa Bohagu Abdulai Mahami Sheriga, has assured Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II of his readiness to make concessions to achieve lasting peace in Bawku.

According to the President, Otumfuo had informed him of the Nayiri’s active cooperation in the ongoing mediation efforts to resolve the Bawku conflict.

Speaking at the Jubilee House on Wednesday while receiving a delegation from the Nayiri, President Mahama stated, “ I met His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II two days ago, and he briefed me on your cooperation in finding a lasting traditional resolution to the conflict. I commend you for your willingness to make concessions for peace in Bawku.”

He urged all parties to continue supporting the mediation process to restore stability in the area.

Conflict’s impact
Expressing concern over the crisis, President Mahama lamented Bawku’s decline from a once-thriving commercial hub to a shadow of its former self. “Youth now roam the streets with sophisticated weapons, firing indiscriminately. Many professionals have left, and public sector workers refuse postings to the area,” he said.

The President also praised the Overlord of Mamprugu for his calm and conciliatory stance despite the tensions surrounding the conflict.
