Akufo-Addo, Bawumia, Napo Lead Tributes for Late Akwatia MP

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and his running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo) have led heartfelt tributes to the late Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, who passed away tragically on Monday morning at the Lister Hospital in Accra.
The 40-year-old legislator’s sudden death has sent shockwaves through the political community.
Akufo-Addo’s tribute
Nana Akufo-Addo described the late MP as a beloved figure, cherished by NPP faithful and all who knew him. ”My deepest sympathies go to his family, Parliament, and the good people of Akwatia Constituency during this unimaginably difficult time,” he said.
Bawumia’s tribute
Dr. Bawumia mourned Kumi as a loyal patriot and dedicated party member. ”I am deeply saddened by the passing of Hon. Ernest Yaw Kumi, MP for Akwatia. He was a committed patriot. My condolences to his family,” he stated.
Napo’s tribute
For his part, Napo said, “It is with shock and deep sadness that we come to terms with the unfortunate passing of Hon.Kumi”. Affectionately known as the ‘Akwatia Star Boy,’ he was passionate about the NPP and devoted to serving his people. It is truly unfortunate that we must lose him at such a time.
Circumstances surrounding his death
Reports indicate that Kumi was in the Western Region over the weekend and returned to Accra on Sunday, showing no signs of illness.
He was preparing for a moot exam at the Ghana School of Law scheduled for Monday and began studying around 8 p.m. on Sunday. At about 1 a.m. on Monday, he complained of chest pains, prompting his wife to rush him to Lister Hospital.
After initial examination and medication, doctors decided to keep him overnight for further observation by a specialist in the morning. His wife stepped out to her car and on her return to the ward, a nurse informed her that he had passed away.
