Akufo-Addo urges Bono East to back Bawumia

President Nana Akufo-Addo has urged the people of Bono East to support Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, as Ghana’s next leader.

Addressing residents in Techiman during his “Thank You and Accounting to the People” tour, Akufo-Addo championed Bawumia as a capable, loyal, and hard-working candidate fit to build on his legacy and propel the country forward.

Akufo-Addo spoke of Bawumia’s competence and dedication, describing him as a leader who has been “loyal, trustworthy, and focused on the welfare of Ghanaians.”

The president emphasised that Bawumia’s performance as Vice President had earned him a reputation as a committed public servant who understood the role’s demands.

“I am much concerned about the person to succeed me,” Akufo-Addo said. “I want someone who can continue my good legacy—a person who has mastered in the job of a vice president.”

He continued, appealing to traditional leaders: “Nananom, my plea is that, please help me bring Mahamudu Bawumia into the great stool because he is a very trustworthy, loyal, honest, and hard-working gentleman who can send Ghana far.”

Akufo-Addo urged Ghanaians to avoid returning to past leadership, drawing on an Akan proverb: “There is this Akan adage which Nananom here can attest to; it says, “it is abomination to reinstall a Chief already destooled,” he said.

“I know Ghanaians will not allow a president who was removed because of poor performance to come back and lead them.”

Highlighting his own legacy, Akufo-Addo pointed to the transformative impact of his Free Senior High School (SHS) programme.

He revealed that prior to the policy’s introduction, Ghana’s human capital was under threat as thousands of students were unable to continue their education due to financial constraints.

“Before I became the president, each year, over 100,000 students at the basic level were forced to end their career because their parents couldn’t afford the cost of sending them to senior high schools,” he explained.

“Thanks to the initiative, I can now boldly tell you that at least 5.7 million JHS graduates are now beneficiaries of the programme. We are now protecting Ghana’s human capital.”

The president added that the Free SHS programme not only expanded access to education but also improved its quality, giving students a better foundation for their future.

He also highlighted the Agenda 111 initiative, which has seen four new district hospitals built in the Bono East region, further improving access to healthcare.
