Race for NPP flag bearer: Favourite Bawumia, Alan to be grilled today

Frontrunner, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and former Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kyerematen will be grilled today as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) kicks off the vetting of its flag bearer aspirants.

Party faithful would be waiting with bated breath for the outcome of the vetting, which political watchers say will give a clear direction for the NPP towards the 2024 general election.

Mr Kyerematen will be the first to face the Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye-led vetting committee before Vice President Bawumia, the man highly tipped to clinch the ultimate, comes face-to-face with the committee.

Statement
On Friday, June 30, 2023, the NPP issued a statement indicating that the vetting of its flag bearer aspirants will take place from July 3rd to 6th, 2023.

The statement signed by the General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, said the party will receive the vetting committee’s report on July 10 and publish it on July 11, 2023. This is to ensure transparency and fairness in the selection process.

In the event of any petitions, they will be submitted to the National Presidential Appeals Committee (NAPAC) from July 12-14, 2023. The NAPAC will sit from July 17th to 18th, 2023 to hear any appeals that may come up from the vetting process.

Vetting Committee
The eleven-member vetting committee will play a significant role in determining the party’s presidential candidate for the 2024 election.

“In accordance with Article 10(3)(F)(ii) of the Party’s Constitution, the National Steering Committee, acting for and on behalf of the National Council, at its emergency meeting held on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, and upon further stakeholder consultations, appointed Rt. Hon. Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye as Chairman of the Vetting Committee for the Party’s Presidential Primary Election,” the party stated in a statement.

Other members of the vetting committee are Kwasi Amoako Atta, Stephen Abankwa Sekyere, Osei Bonsu Amoah ( spokesperson of the committee), Lord Oblitey Commey, Frank Davies, Hackman Owusu-Agyeman, Adelaide Ahwireng, and Evans Nimako ( secretary of the committee).
