Otumfuo tours key medical facilities in A/R; Promises to see to operationalisation of Sewua hospital
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has assured to intervene to ensure the operationalisation of the Ashanti Regional Hospital at Sewua in the Bosomtwe District.
This was after he toured the project yesterday, February 29, 2024. It was a busy day for the King as he also visited the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and the Manhyia Government Hospital to inspect ongoing projects.
The non-operationalisation of the 250-bed Regional Hospital has been a source of concern to many people in the region. Officials attributed the non-functioning of the hospital to challenges including poor access of roads.
Among other facilities, the hospital has 10 theatres, Intensive Care Unit, delivery suites, specialist clinics, and a medical gas plant for the production of medical gases.
Otumfuo unhappy
Briefing journalists after the tour of the regional hospital, the Regional Director of Health, Dr Emmanuel Tenkorang said the Asantehene was unhappy that the project has been left inoperational even though work is completed.
According to Dr Tenkorang, Otumfuo assured that he will talk to the necessary quarters to ensure that the facility is completed and put to use.
Impressed with KATH works
At KATH, the Asantehene inspected the A4 and A5 Blocks where renovation works have already started. He was led on the tour by the hospital’s CEO, Prof Otchere Addai Mensah, the Chairman of Heal KATH project, Samuel Adu Boakye, and Kojo Darko, an architect.
In November, 2023, Otumfuo launched an initiative to raise $10 million for the comprehensive renovation of the 70-year-old in-patient wards at KATH.
He was worried that the ageing blocks which house the main wards of the hospital have never been renovated since their construction in 1955, which was adversely impacting on the quality of in-patient care hence his decision to lead the drive for their refurbishment.
Officials said Otumfuo was impressed with the ongoing works.
Manhyia Hospital
At the Manhyia Government Hospital, Otumfuo visited the Maternity Ward expansion project. He was led by the Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr Kwaku Kamaldeen Hussein. Also, accompanying the King were some traditional leaders.
