Otumfuo Marks Akwasidae

ALL ROADS in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital, on Sunday, led to the historic Manhyia Palace where Akwasidae, a significant traditional festival in the Asante Kingdom, was marked.

The colourful traditional programme, which was held amid pomp and pageantry, saw the 16th occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, seated in State to supervise the big event.

Otumfuo, who is popularly known as ‘King Solomon’ due to his unique wisdom, development-oriented nature and exceptional leadership qualities, was welcomed to the durbar grounds with wild shouts of joy.

The King, who is well vexed in the rich Asante traditional culture, was nicely dressed in ‘Kente’ cloth with gold ornaments to match as he sat in state for people from various backgrounds to pay homage to him.

A number of powerful paramount chiefs and Queen Mothers as well as divisional chiefs in the Asante Kingdom were present at the Manhyia Palace to add colour and glamour to the big occasion.

Also in attendance were top politicians, government officials, security capos, business tycoons, the clergy and people from the various backgrounds, who were there ostensibly to pay homage to their King.

As usually done during Akwasidae festivals, the Asantehene did not deliver any speech at the function. The programme was characterized by the singing of traditional Asante tunes and dancing.

Interestingly, virtually all the attendants of the programme were seen showing their love, respect and support to the Asante Monarch when Otumfuo was leaving the durbar grounds to end the event.
