NPP announces stringent regulations for presidential primary; Camping of delegates banned
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential elections committee has announced a ban of camping of delegates for the November 4 presidential primary.
In a raft of regulations to ensure that the primary passes in a free and fair manner, the chairman of the committee, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye said on Thursday that, “ We have generally agreed that there will be nothing like camping of persons so that people will come freely and vote freely.”
Four aspirants, Kennedy Agyapong ( 1st spot on ballot paper), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ( 2nd spot), Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto ( 3rd spot), and Francis Addai Nimo ( 4th spot) will battle it out in the polls to elect the presidential candidate of the NPP for the 2024 general elections.
Tightening rules
Prof. Oquaye stated: “We are streamlining and tightening the rules in such a way that at the end of the day the NPP will win, not any particular person.” He added that the committee would meet the police together with the Electoral Commission ( EC) “so that everybody sings from the same hymnbook on that day.”
No influence
Prof. Oquaye further indicated that no official of the party can have any influence on election day. “You go to your own constituency and vote and you’re done,” he stressed.
Explaining further, the committee chairman said party officials will not get accreditation to enter any area so that there will be no allegations of some people influencing voters. This is to ensure that at the end of the day, everything is clear and clean.
Proxy rules
Prof. Oquaye noted that there had been a lot of problems about proxy voting, and added that measures are being taken to address them. “We know there has been a lot of problems about proxies. People sometimes come and no one really can tell until the last minute. It is going to be resolved a month before the election, “he explained.
