NDC meeting turns bloody …guns fired, leaders beaten

Executive members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Salaga South Constituency abandoned a meeting they were attending at the party office last Sunday and fled for their lives when angry party members stormed the venue and started to beat up the leaders without showing any form of mercy.

The invaders, mostly angry looking men also vandalized party property at the office while some of them gave the escaping constituency party leaders a hot chase in an attempt to dish them some additional beatings.

During the melee, gunshots were heard but so far no one has reported of being shot at. It is suspected the guns were fired as warning shots or just to put fear into the fleeing party leaders.

The injured leaders lodged complaints at the Police station and were given medical forms for treatment. Some of them have since been discharged and nursing their wounds.

No arrests have been made as at the time of filing this report Monday night some 24 hours after the incident.

Some of the angry men who stormed the party office alleged that the constituency executives had become disloyal to the spirit and principles of the party and that they championed a skirt and blouse vote against the party during the 2020 general elections.

The NDC in Salaga South has not been able to fully patch up internal cracks that developed during the constituency parliamentary primaries in 2019 and last Sunday’s incident is believed to be a ripple of the said division.

Without providing any evidence, one of the attackers, Ibraim Maik, alleged that the NDC Salaga South Constituency Chairman, Youth Organizer, Organizer, Communication Director and Women Organizer all campaigned against the party’s candidate, Hajia Zuweira Ibrahimah, in the run-up to the 2020 general elections.

“They campaigned for skirt and blouse against the MP but she won. The MP is now the leader of the party and under no circumstance should a meeting be organized without her consent. We want all the executives who are against the woman out”, Ibraim Maik added.

Though the Member of Parliament for the constituency Hajia Zuweira Ibrahimah is not personally responsible for sanctioning the angry party members, they are believed to be her supporters who feel disappointed about the alleged disloyalty displayed by the party leaders.

Instead of waiting for constituency executive elections to vote them out, they however decided to settle scores using physical violence.

Who Is Hajia Zuweira Ibrahimah?

Hajia Zuwera Ibrahimah, a former Minister-Counsellor and Head of Information and Public Relations of the Ghana High Commission in London,  is the first woman to have won the Salaga South NDC parliamentary primaries since 1992.

She holds MA in Diplomacy and International Business from the University of East Anglia in the UK and after winning the primaries went ahead and won the seat for her party in the 2020 elections.

At the said NDC primaries, Hajia Zuwera Ibrahimah polled Hajia Zuwera Braimah 472 votes to beat her closest contender, Alhaji Ibrahim Dey who polled 260 votes.

Alhaji Dan another contender had 116 votes and one more person, Alhaji Lukman Jawula had just one (1) vote. MORE SOON.
