Kwesi Ahwoi sparks outrage in NDC

A leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kwesi Ahwoi has sparked outrage in the party for asking Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang to be ready to become President of Ghana because John Dramani Mahama will not serve his four-year term if he wins this year’s presidential election.

Kwesi, 77, the youngest of the influential Ahwoi brothers of the NDC, said at an event in Accra last Thursday to celebrate Prof. Opoku-Agyemang as the running mate for the NDC’s presidential candidate in the 2024 elections that, once Mr Mahama became President following the death of President Mills, so also she could become President by the workings of nature.

“John Mahama wasn’t prepared for the presidency but nature skewed things in such a way that President Mills had to give way to John Mahama. Anything can happen so Naana, always be prepared, like your motto says. Be ready, anything can happen and you can become the President of Ghana,” he said.

Kwesi, was the Minister of Agriculture under President Mills, and Minister of the Interior under President Mahama.

Mahama’s aide reacts
Joyce Bawah Mogtari, aide to former President Mahama is livid about the statement by Kwesi. In a Facebook post, she warned, “ Let’s be careful about the things we say and do, so that our actions do not destroy good things!”

Interpretation
Many people have also been reading meanings into Kwesi’s statement, with some indicating that, he suggested that Mr Mahama could die for Prof. Opoku-Agyemang to take over as it happened when Prof. Mills died for Mahama to take over.

Others also said the statement is a confirmation of the alleged long-held belief that the Ahwoi brothers, who also include Ato and Kwamena, are anti-Mahama.
