The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has destooled the Kwaprahene, Nana Adu Gyamfi Kumanin over multiple sale of lands, embezzlement of stool funds and the demonstration of contempt to the Golden Stool and the Akwamu Division.

The chief , who has been on the stool for about 30 years was declared destooled at the Kumasi Traditional Council meeting at the Manhyia Palace on Monday, December 11, 2024.

Fifth destoolment

Nana Adu Gyamfi Kumanin becomes the fifth traditional ruler to be destooled by the King of the Asante Kingdom this year for offences including galamsey and illegal sale of land .

Other former chiefs who were destooled were the Antoahene Nana Kwame Owusu Agyeman; Kwasohene Nana Nketia Boampong; Bekwai Abodomhene Nana Saforo Koto, and Nkonsonhene Nana Osei Tiri Ababio.

Summons

On October 20, 2023, the Asantehene gave the chief two weeks to appear before him to answer the charges or consider himself destooled .

The King, at a meeting of the Kumasi Traditional Council said he has had enough of incessant excuses by some of his chiefs, adding that he had come to realise that it was just a ploy to evade justice, after committing offences.

“In two weeks, if he doesn’t show up, he should declare himself destooled,” the King warned.

Absent

When the matter came up for further hearing last Monday, the chief again failed to appear and was therefore destooled in absentia.

It was ordered that the necessary traditional rites should take place to signify his destoolment .

Background

Nana Gyamfi Kumanin was accused of engaging in multiple sale of lands and embezzlment of funds.

The case was officially brought before Otumfuo and the traditional council after one of his victims opted for the traditional channel and petitioned the Council, paving the way for all other victims to use the same means and make their cases against the chief.

After hearing the woman’s case against the chief, Otumfuo, who is the President of the Kumasi Traditional Council recalled pardoning and warning him against similar charges some years ago.

He was thus ordered to be destooled immediately.

Stool elders of the Kwapra were also found culpable for failing to administer their mandate of putting the chief to order in the course of his misconduct.
