The incoming Attorney-General AG and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has hinted that his priority as AG would be to chase economic saboteurs and secessionists.
To effectively carry out that mission, he said he was putting in a request to the Judicial Service through the Chief Justice, Kwesi Anin-Yeboah, to commit a few judges for a speedy trial of such nagging cases.
Interestingly, he disclosed that such delinquents would include indolent public officers who by their actions undermine the interests of the State, cause economic losses and put obstacles in the way of the AG from effectively defending the State in suits.
Environment
That, we think, is a great idea, coming from elections in which the swansong from both ends had been corruption involving “family and friends”.
The leading opposition National Democratic Congress and the ruling party, the New Patriotic Party, led in the saber-rattling game, the NDC sounding shrillest.
But the AG’s intended mission also comes against the background of a positive nod for Ghana as a nation improving on its anti-corruption canker. We had certainly, by the ratings of the global anti-corruption analysts, been doing well.
Flagbearer of the NDC John Dramani Mahama had led his party apparatchiks, as choirmaster, in singing that tune, though he failed to use the appropriate channels and relevant institutions to confront the allegation and the perpetrators.
Election Petition
Corruption was still an issue, going into the election petition and wading through it. It was also an issue after the verdict was delivered, with the Petitioner slinging mud at the Justices to the point of calling them corrupt or dishonest.
After delivery of the ruling, the verdict – and swansong out there – is still not only about the justices being corrupt, but that leading members of the Minority in the NDC, too, were that depraved. Bagbin, Muntaka and Haruna Iddrisu.
The only persons not corrupt now in Ghana are John Mahama, Asiedu Nketia, Dr. Dominic Ayine, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, SammyAgyei, and Sammy Ablakwa. Plus, the barking dogs of John Mahama – kids who never saw the beginning of Jerry John Rawlings and how he was betrayed by his own; nor are they ready for a reform of the party that they hail as clean and others corrupt.
The courts, our umpires
So that we prove who is corrupt and who is neat and patriotic, it is the prayer of The Thunder that the AG’s mission starts pronto for the courts processes to roll out.
Already, before the elections, the ax was grinding in criminal matters involving the COCOBOD. There were others involving the MCE for Tema as well as some of the directors at the National Communications Authority.
Aside from that, there also other cases that Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu was handling before his voluntary exit.
All these, as they grind fatalistically to their conclusion, will reveal who truly is corrupt; and whether it is the tottering NDC or the ruling NPP.
We would recall, however, that in 2008, that picture was painted only for the NDC to retreat, after chasing NPP MPs and appointees about town – smearing and accusing them – without proving a single case of corruption.
