Bawku Peaceful: No Gunshots No Cutlass Attacks – Regional Minister Declares

There has been total peace in Bawku over the past 90 days, the Upper East Region Regional Minister, Akamugri Donatus Atanga, has revealed.

The situation, he noted, prevails in other parts of the region. “The area has remained peaceful over the last 90 days. No gunshot, no cutlass attacks,” he said.

He thanked the security agencies for doing a good job.

Dispute
Bawku was rooted in decades of conflict as a result of chieftaincy dispute between the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities that dates back to colonial administrative decisions. The Bawku municipality has suffered repeated outbreaks of violence, resulting in hundreds of deaths, displacement of residents, and disruptions to businesses and essential services.

Otumfuo’s mediation
Recent mediation efforts by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, concluded that Zugraan Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II is the legitimate ruler of Bawku under the 1992 Constitution.

The Regional Minister has also initiated plans to revive the inter-ethnic peace committee to support long-term reconciliation through dialogue involving chiefs, politicians, opinion leaders, and community members.
