9 dead, 4 injured in galamsey pit collapse at Tontokrom

Nine illegal miners have been reported dead following a mine collapse at Tontokrom in the Asutifi South District in the Ahafo Region.
Four others sustained injuries and have been rushed to a nearby health facility for treatment.
The mine, located in Asutifi South, has been identified as a hotspot for illegal mining activities, locally known as galamsey.
Authorities also noted that the collapse occurred despite ongoing interventions by the National Inter-Ministerial Taskforce on Small-Scale Mining (NAIMOS), which was previously attacked in the area.
The victims are part of a growing number of illegal miners operating in the region, raising concerns about safety and enforcement in small-scale mining operations.
