Alhaji Baba Kamara, Head of the ECOWAS Observation Mission (HoM) in Guinea-Bissau, has been lauded for demonstrating extraordinary leadership during the recent post-election crisis in the country.
Despite having multiple opportunities to leave Guinea-Bissau on special flights, Kamara chose to remain with the over 130 ECOWAS election observers until the last member of the mission could be safely evacuated.
Through his intervention, ASKY Airlines has arranged a chartered flight to transport all ECOWAS observers from Bissau to Lomé, Togo, on Friday, November 28.
The post-election period in Guinea-Bissau was marked by a military takeover, which left observers stranded under a 24-hour curfew until the swearing-in of the new military junta led by General Horta N’tam. Former President Umaro Sissoco Embaló has since been airlifted to Senegal.
ECOWAS observers have expressed deep appreciation for Kamara’s commitment, praising Ghana’s leadership role in West Africa. His steady presence and decisive action, they said, ensured the safety and orderly evacuation of the mission.
Baba Kamara, who previously served as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, a senior official at the ECOWAS Commission under President Atta-Mills, and National Security Advisor during President John Mahama’s first term, currently serves as ECOWAS Special Envoy on Counterterrorism, a position he was appointed to in 2023.
