Workers, trade unionists, and activists from across the African continent have converged at the Obra Spot in Accra, today, Friday, August 29, 2025, to begin a rally calling for debt cancellation for African countries.
The event, dubbed the Pan-African Debt Cancellation Rally and Trade Justice Campaign, seeks to highlight the devastating effects of unfair loan agreements and credit facilities that have worsened underdevelopment across the continent.
Organised by the African Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-Africa) in partnership with the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC), the rally brings together labour leaders, civil society actors, and campaigners pushing for a new financial framework that prioritises growth, jobs, and social justice over unsustainable debt servicing.
Organisers said the rally is also meant to pressure African governments and international financial institutions to adopt fairer lending practices, renegotiate existing credit arrangements, and commit to policies that protect workers and vulnerable communities.
