DVLA unveils Lorry Terminal Initiative to enhance accessibility of driver services

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has rolled out a new Lorry Terminal Project to make its services more accessible to stakeholders, particularly commercial drivers.
The initiative will allow drivers to access key licensing services directly from lorry terminals across the country without having to visit traditional DVLA offices. Services available include applying for new licences, renewing existing ones, replacing expired or missing licences, converting foreign licences, obtaining international driving permits, and upgrading licences.
DVLA Chief Executive Officer, Julius Neequaye Kotey, said the project is part of a broader strategy to improve service delivery and enhance efficiency in the transport sector.
“We are here to launch the DVLA Lorry Terminal Project to ensure that everyone who qualifies to drive can acquire the requisite certification. Licences must be renewed two years after issuance, renewed again two years later, and replaced a year after the second renewal. These processes include an eye examination to ensure drivers meet the required vision standards,” Mr. Kotey explained.
To facilitate this, the DVLA will work with the Ghana Optometric Association to provide on-site eye testing as part of the licensing process.
Mr. Kotey urged commercial drivers to take advantage of the initiative to ensure their documents are up to date. “This project is tailored for you, even though it is also open to the general public,” he said.
Drivers at the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) Circle Kaneshie Station branch have welcomed the move, saying it will save them time and money while helping them maintain compliance.
