Court acquits Kwesi Nyantakyi over Number 12 exposé

The High Court has discharged former GFA boss Kwesi Nyanyakyi from the ongoing trial over his involvement in the number 12 exposé.

This follows the failure of the prosecution to present Anas Aremeyaw Anas who is a key witness in the case against Kwasi Nyantakyi.

Kwesi Nyantakyi has been facing trial for counts of conspiracy to commit fraud and corruption as well as fraud and corruption for his actions taped in the investigative piece.

The number 12 exposé uncovered alleged corrupt acts in the football business on the continent.

Kwasi Nyantakyi who was a casualty in the expose was captured receiving money from an undercover reporter who posed as a businessman.

Kwasi Nyantakyi was heard in the video promising to help with the business interests of the said businessman revealing plans to leverage his connections with then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

He was also accused of taking bribes to facilitate player selections for the Ghana National team.
The trial has, however, delayed due to controversies over whether the author of the expose, Anas Aremeyaw Anas whose modus operandi is to be in a mask when in public should be made to testify with or without the mask.

Anas had given an indication to testify with the mask while Kwasi Nyantakyi and his lawyers wanted him to do so without a mask.

The High Court faced with a motion on the matter, asked Anas to rather unmask in chambers to Kwasi Nyantakyi before testifying with a mask in open court.

But on appeal, the court of appeal in a unanimous decision ordered Anas to testify without the mask.

When the case was called on Thursday, February 13, 2025, state prosecutors however requested a month’s adjournment as they sought the Attorney General’s advice on the matter as they could not produce Anas to testify.

Lawyers for Kwasi Nyantakyi however urged the court to strike the charges against the accused for want of prosecution.

The Judge thus discharged the Kwasi Nyantakyi.
