Was Bawumia Challenging Mahama To Come For Mano-A-Mano Debate?
A viral photo of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and John Mahama in what looks like a chat at yesterday’s signing of the presidential peace pact, has ignited questions of whether the NPP presidential candidate was telling his main opponent to be a man and agree to a debate.
Although the two seemed to be smiling in the photo, netizens believe Dr Bawumia in his trademark humorous style, was challenging the NDC presidential candidate to be a man enough and come for a mano-a-mano debate.
Dr Bawumia has persistently challenged Mr Mahama to a debate ahead of the elections, but the former President has rejected it.
Netizens
Commenting on the photo of the two leading contestants on social media, one person stated, “They should have used this opportunity to do the debate. Anyway, Ghana will choose Dr Bawumia to lead the count.”
Another said, “Mahama, be a man and take up the challenge to debate Dr Bawumia mano-a-mano.”
Ghana will win
In a speech after signing the pact, Dr Bawumia expressed the hope that Ghana will come out of the election stronger.
“We will come out of this election stronger as a nation. We are hopeful all sides will take some positive steps to preserve the unity, peace and stability of this country. We owe our people, particularly the teeming youth that duty of care. Only this way would our resolve to create better and enduring opportunities for the future generations be guaranteed,” he said.
Commitment
On his own behalf and that of the NPP, Dr Bawumia pledged his commitment to working with all officials mandated to help conduct the elections and also abide by the rules and regulations governing this civic exercise.
He stated, “As we acknowledge the efforts of others, we must also endeavour to contribute our deal. That is why the signing of the 2024 presidential peace pact is profoundly significant. Every general election in Ghana since 1992 has had its own dynamics and the stakes are always high. But we have never turned our backs on democracy because that is the path we have chosen for ourselves, and it is the right way to go.
“As we head into the December 2024 polls, the ninth presidential election in Ghana, nine days from today, I am certain of two outcomes: Ghana will win, and peace will reign. We have been here before and can prove again that Ghana is a shining example of a resilient democracy.”
