Otumfuo hosts Commonwealth Parliamentary delegates at Manhyia Palace
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference(CPC) to use its meeting in Ghana to enhance democracy and good governance in Africa. “You have a golden chance to contribute to the enhancement of democracy on the continent. This, in my view, will promote development,“ he said.
Otumfuo made the call when he hosted delegates of the 66th CPC at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Tuesday.
In his speech read on his behalf by the Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu, the Asantehene noted the important role parliament plays in building a stronger democracy and said the CPC cannot afford to fail their peoples in that regard.
The conference
The 66th CPC is being hosted by the Parliament of Ghana and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Ghana branch in Accra, from September 30 to October 6, 2023.
The conference, which is being held on the theme, “The Commonwealth Charter 10 years on: Values and Principles for Parliaments to Uphold”, marks the 10th anniversary of the Commonwealth Charter which outlines the principles and values of the Commonwealth.
Asante culture
Led by the First Deputy Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Joe Osei-Owusu, the delegates were treated to a taste of the rich Asante culture.
The delegates, who included Speakers of some of the parliaments within the Commonwealth, were excited on seeing the King physically for the first time. Beaming with smiles, they moved one after the other from their seats to pay homage to His Majesty who sat in state.
Ghana’s role
The Asantehene said the CPC being held in Ghana is a testament to the positive role the country has been playing in the affairs of the Commonwealth. He noted that if the parliamentary association continues to work together in pursuit of their aspirations, the Commonwealth would continue to make an impact in world affairs.
Otumfuo thanked the delegates for the visit to Kumasi. Touching on the theme, the King said it provides an opportunity for the association to take stock of the past activities and chart a path towards future development.
Recognition
Speaking on behalf of the delegates, Mr Osei-Owusu said the delegates decided to pay homage to Otumfuo since they have heard of his industrious reign. “They are excited to shake hands with you, and we are appreciative for hosting this durbar,” he told Otumfuo.
