Wendy Shay Reveals Mother Urged Her to Abandon Music Career and Return to Germany Amid Online Bullying

Ghanaian singer Wendy Shay has shared an emotional account of how online trolling nearly drove her out of the music industry.

In a candid interview on the Afrobeats Podcast with Adesope Shopsydoo, the award-winning artist opened up about the mental toll of being constantly bullied online, especially in the early stages of her career.

According to Wendy, she faced intense backlash from some Ghanaians who felt she was trying to imitate the late Ebony Reigns. The criticism became so severe that even her family began to feel the impact.

“At a point, my mum asked me to quit music and return to Germany because the trolling was overwhelming and it affected everyone in my family,” she said. “Some of my relatives were even kind of shy to associate with me at the time.”

The RuffTown Records signee described how deeply the insults and ridicule cut, recalling the harshness of some of the content circulated about her online.

“Imagine they take your face, edit it to make you look like an old woman, and start mocking and laughing at you. They even said I wasn’t talented enough. It was crazy. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy, but it built me,” Wendy added.

Despite the negativity, she acknowledged that there were people who supported and encouraged her to keep going. Their belief in her talent helped her push through the criticism and continue making music.

Since her breakthrough, Wendy Shay has gone on to win several awards, including honors at the Ghana Music Awards and 3Music Awards. Her latest release, It’s Too Late, has been widely praised and is currently making waves on global music charts.

Wendy’s story is a powerful reminder of the resilience needed to succeed in the public eye—and how support and inner strength can turn pain into purpose.
