Police and Military assure Public of restoring security in Bawku

In response to escalating violence in Bawku and along the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway, the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces have reassured the public that robust measures are in place to stabilize the situation.

Following recent clashes in Bawku after the return of a rival chief and an ambush on travellers that claimed eight lives, security forces are intensifying their presence in affected areas.

The violence in Bawku, a long-standing conflict fueled by chieftaincy disputes, reignited when Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief who had been in exile, returned to the area.

This return led to renewed tension between factions, culminating in violent confrontations and the loss of multiple lives.

As a spillover effect of the conflict, armed men mounted roadblocks along the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway, particularly around Gbimsi, targeting travellers from the Bawku area.

The attacks on the highway led to the tragic deaths of eight people and the destruction of several vehicles.

In a statement, the security agencies confirmed the deployment of joint police and military personnel to manage the situation in Bawku and secure the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway, with a focus on maintaining law and order while ensuring the safety of travellers.

They have emphasized that the presence of security personnel along the highway is aimed at preventing further violence, ensuring safe passage, and managing vehicular traffic.

The security services have encouraged the public to remain calm and assured that every effort is being made to bring peace to the affected regions.

The Ghana Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to restoring order and protecting lives in Bawku and along the critical highway to ensure the region’s safety.
