MOBO Awards: Ayra Starr wins best African Music Act in 16 years

Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Ayra Starr has etched her name in history at the 2025 Music of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards, becoming the first woman in 16 years to claim the Best African Music Act award.
On Tuesday, the 22-year-old artist added another milestone to her career by winning the Best International Music Act award at the prestigious ceremony, held at the Utilita Arena in Newcastle, United Kingdom.
The event honored outstanding achievements in Black music and culture, further emphasising the rising influence of African artists on the global stage.
Ayra Starr’s triumph in the Best International Music Act category is particularly significant, as she becomes the first African female artist to secure the award—an achievement that has eluded many before her.
Ayra Starr, in her acceptance speech, expressed her gratitude to her fans, team, and the MOBO Awards for recognising her hard work and dedication.
“Okay, this is my first MOBO. And this is the first time I’m winning a MOBO Award—make some noise! I am actually shaking right now. I am actually nervous. Thank you so much to everybody who supported me. Thank you to my team—my amazing MOB-STARS.
“My amazing brothers who make music with me—the producers in the studio—my studio partners in crime; my label—MAVINS record, Embryo, my mummy. Thank you so much. Thank you, MOBOs,” she said.
