Kwabena Kwabena Opens Up: Prayer Was Key to Overcoming Severe Depression

Renowned Ghanaian highlife singer and songwriter, Kwabena Kwabena, has opened up about a deeply personal battle with depression — a period he describes as one of the darkest in his life and career.
Speaking in an interview with Doreen Avio on Hitz FM, the “Aso” hitmaker, born George Kwabena Adu, shared his experience in hopes of encouraging others who may be facing similar mental health challenges.
“There was a time in my life I went through serious depression,” he revealed. “It was so intense that only those close to me can truly testify or describe what I went through.”
According to Kwabena Kwabena, his mental state at the time was so distorted that he often expressed his anguish unknowingly through social media. “Sometimes I look back at the posts I made and I ask myself, ‘OMG, did I actually write that?’ That’s how far depression can take you,” he admitted.
The celebrated musician also noted how his appearance changed during that period, leading people to draw false conclusions about him. “I look at my photos then and compare them to now — it gives me a clear view of what I went through. Depression affects more than just the mind; it affects how you look, how you live,” he said.
Kwabena Kwabena emphasized that one thing helped him emerge from that dark phase — prayer.
“For me, the only thing that helped and can help someone out of depression is prayer,” he stressed.
He also expressed deep appreciation for his mother, who stood by him and prayed with him through it all. “And I’m truly grateful to my mother, who prayed with me through it all,” he added with heartfelt emotion.
By sharing his journey, Kwabena Kwabena hopes to inspire others battling depression to speak up, seek support, and most importantly, turn to faith and prayer for strength.
