“I Struggled with Compulsive Behavior and Alcohol” – Yaw Siki Shares His Turbulent Past

Former Ghanaian hiplife artiste turned gospel minister, Yaw Siki, has opened up about the dark chapters of his past, sharing how his previous lifestyle was filled with substance abuse, sexual immorality, and personal struggles before he surrendered his life to Christ.

In an honest and unfiltered interview with media personality DrPounds on Pounds TV, the one-time hitmaker of ‘Wope Dodo’ revealed that before his transformation, his lifestyle was far from godly.

“I used to chop ashawo and I was addicted to porno,” he said bluntly, explaining how his constant engagement with pornography eventually led to chronic masturbation.

He recalled that during those days, he frequently slept with prostitutes and spent a significant amount of time watching adult content. “At a point, I wanted to sleep with girls but I wasn’t getting them like that, and that’s what led me to become a chronic masturbator,” he added.

Yaw Siki also shared how substance use was a big part of his lifestyle during his music career. According to him, he started drinking at a very young age, even before reaching junior high school, and by the time he was in senior high, he had picked up smoking as well.

“Yoo, I was a heavy drinker. Like I knew how to drink waa. When it came to alcohol, I knew how to drink paa. I also knew how to smoke waa. If you were looking for one of the artistes in Tema who knew how to smoke, I was one of them,” he recalled.

The musician attributed some of these early influences to his upbringing. He revealed that both of his parents were heavy drinkers, and he often had to run errands to buy alcoholic beverages for them. “That’s how I started drinking,” he said. “I’m not ashamed to say it now because they are no more. They won’t be embarrassed by it.”

Yaw Siki also revisited the life-altering event that led him to reevaluate his choices and ultimately led to his conversion. On April 15, 2013, he survived a near-fatal accident on the Accra-Tema Motorway. The accident occurred around midnight as he and a friend were returning to Tema from a business meeting in Accra. The Toyota Camry they were travelling in somersaulted near the KICC Dominion Centre.

While the driver sustained minor injuries, Yaw Siki suffered serious head injuries that required extensive medical attention. That moment, he says, changed everything.

“Before the accident, I started feeling empty inside. Something wasn’t right,” he said. “That accident was a turning point for me. It pushed me to surrender my life to Christ.”

Since then, Yaw Siki—born Isaac Okine—has become an outspoken gospel minister, dedicating his life to preaching the word of God and sharing his testimony to inspire others, particularly the youth.
