VP Bawumia reminds religious leaders to use their platforms to propagate peaceful coexistence

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has reiterated the need for Churches to continue to use their platforms to preach peaceful religious coexistence as the Church has a critical role in national development.

The Vice President giving the assurance of the government’s determination to resolve the current economic problems, called for a bi-partisan approach to resolving the current economic challenges.

Dr Bawumia made these remarks when the leadership of the Assemblies of God Church paid a courtesy call on him at the Jubilee House.

Vice President Bawumia commended the Assemblies of God, Ghana for being the first Pentecostal Church to use social action activities to evangelize and for investing in the establishment of about 350 schools.

While congratulating the newly elected leadership, Dr. Bawumia thanked the Church for organising a national week of fasting for the nation.

For his part, the General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Church, Rev Stephen Yenusom Wengam said the Church has the nation’s progress at heart and are fervently praying for the growth and development of the economy.

He was hopeful that a fruitful negotiations will be reached with the IMF for Ghana to receive the much needed bailout.

Touching on discussions surrounding the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme, Rev. Wengam empathized with victims of the haircut calling on the Vice President who is the Chairman of the Economic Management Team, to use his office to ensure that individual bond holders and other vulnerable groups are spared the ravages of any harsh economic measures.

Rev. Wengam commended the Vice President for his instrumental role in cementing religious harmony in Ghana stressing that his outreach to churches in particular and Christian community in general has no parallel in the country’s history.

He said the Church will to continue to pray for the government and people in authority until the economic circumstances improve.

Assemblies of God is one of the largest Pentecostal Church with about 70 million members across the globe and 600,000 members in Ghana.
