Gov’t Attacks Graphic Over ‘Teacher Trainee Allowance To Go’ Report; But Graphic Calls Off Bluff

The state-owned Daily Graphic has called off the bluff of government after the newspaper came under a scathing attack over a publication that plans are underway to scrap teacher trainee allowance.
According to the Ministry of Education, the story was ‘misleading” and “sensational”, but the newspaper fires back saying it stands by the story.

The flagship newspaper of the Graphic Communications Group Limited, published a lead story on Tuesday, February 4, 2025 with the headline, “Teacher Trainee Allowance To Go” attributing the statement to the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu.

Outrage
The story caused outrage within the teacher training institutions, as students lambasted the John Mahama government for lying to them during the election campaign that he will not cancel the allowance if he wins the elections.

Ministry’s reaction
The Ministry, on Tuesday, issued a press statement strongly denying claims that teacher trainee allowances are being scrapped.

In the statement, the Ministry emphasized that the story misrepresented what the Minister said. “We wish to categorically state that the news item does not reflect the true and accurate reporting of what the Hon. Minister stated,” the Ministry explained.

Clarification
Clarifying what the Minister said during an engagement with the Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF), the statement indicated that the government remains committed to supporting students financially. “Government is open to augmenting the financial needs of students in the Colleges of Education,” the statement quoted the Minister as saying.

Furthermore, the statement said, the Minister noted that the government was exploring the possibility of an enhanced loan scheme for students, should the need arise.
