Fire ravages parts of Mankessim market

Properties running into thousands of Ghana cedis have been destroyed after fire razed parts of the Mankessim market in the Mfantsiman Municipality of the Central Region.

Sources said the fire started around 11:30 pm on Tuesday night.

Firefighters were called in late in the night to douse the inferno.

Although the cause of the fire is not yet known, some persons within the market have attributed the incident to an electrical fault.

The assembly member for Nkusukum electoral area, Samuel Kofi Baiden, said the incident could have been prevented if the Mfantsiman Municipal Assembly had provided the market with fire extinguishers.

“This is the first time I have witnessed a fire outbreak here. It has never happened before. The Mfansteman Municipal Assembly should have been proactive. We should have provided the security officers with fire extinguishers.”

This incident comes days after the administration block of the Asante Mampong College of Education in the Asante Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region was destroyed by fire.

The incident happened on Monday, April 19, 2021.

Separate fires at the Sokoban Wood Village and at the Kumasi Central Market also resulted in the destruction of some sheds and shops.
