Election 2024: We won’t give you serial numbers of BVR kits – EC tells NDC
The Electoral Commission (EC) has rejected a request by the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to have serial numbers of Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits deployed for the ongoing voter registration exercise.
The NDC insists that due to the stolen BVR kits from the EC under CCTV watch, NDC agents at the registration centres must record serial numbers of all BVR kits in order not to impugn the integrity of the December elections.
Yesterday afternoon, the party called a news conference where its National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah insisted, “ The EC must have our agents to record the serial numbers of the BVRs if they have nothing to hide.”
Critical role of BVRs
But just before the NDC addressed the news conference, the EC issued a press statement stressing the critical role of BVR kits in the electoral process, and explained why it is unreasonable to release the serial numbers to external parties.
Signed by the Commission’s Acting Director of Public Affairs, Michael Boadu, the statement said, “The Commission wishes to highlight that the integrity and security of our electoral process are paramount.
Each BVR Kit, as a critical component of this process, is assigned a unique serial number. This number plays a critical role in the operations of these devices, particularly in the generation of activation codes essential for their functionality as well as tracking their location and movement.”
It further stated: “The serial numbers are integral to the security framework of the BVR kits. Disclosure of these numbers could potentially allow unauthorised access to the devices, thereby compromising integrity of the voter registration process.”
