2 killed in Odumase illegal mine collapse

Two more lives have been lost to galamsey in the Ashanti Region. On Saturday, a galamsey pit at Odumase in the Asante Akim Central Municipality in which three male adults were digging for the gold caved in killing two while one survived .

Reports indicated that the illegal miners were working in the concession of the Northern Ashanti Mining company, a small scale mining company in the community. Illegal mine collapse is common in mineral-rich Ashanti Region. Officials have remained powerless, unable to find an antidote to the galamsey activities.

Community members
In a recovery exercise, an excavator was brought in to help cut through inside the ground.
Community members said they took part in the exercise and after about six hours, two bodies were recovered while one was saved.

NADMO confirms
Officials from the municipal office of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) confirmed the incident .

According to them, they sought the assistance of an excavator operator and members of the community to help recover the bodies.

The Municipal NADMO Director, Jones Osei Asamoah said the bodies were sent to the morgue for identification.
