Efya Urges Increased Radio Play and Streaming Support for Ghanaian Women Artists

Award-winning Ghanaian singer Efya has called for stronger local support for female musicians in the country, highlighting the need for more airplay and local streams to help them thrive.

Speaking in an interview with radio host Nana Romeo on Accra FM, Efya was asked why many Ghanaian female artistes, especially emerging ones, are not as widely recognized or heard within the country. In response, she pointed to streaming and radio exposure as two key challenges.

“Their songs are not streamed enough in Ghana,” Efya explained. “When you take a close look at the data, you’ll see most of the streams are coming from outside the country.”

According to her, while several female musicians are doing exceptionally well, especially internationally, the lack of consistent local radio airplay limits their visibility at home.

“Radio stations in Ghana don’t play our songs enough. That should have been the best stepping stone to push more female talents into the limelight,” she added.

When Nana Romeo suggested that the number of active and vibrant female musicians in Ghana might not even reach ten, the ‘Best In Me’ singer firmly disagreed.

“That’s not true at all,” she responded. “There are so many amazing women doing well. Look at Lali and Lola, Anabel Rose, Haeven, Sefa, Gyakie, Moliy, Baaba J, Ria Boss, Cina Soul, Amaarae—these ladies are breaking boundaries with their music. They are making Ghana proud.”

She emphasized that with more local radio support and consistent streaming by Ghanaians, these artistes would gain even greater recognition and growth.

Efya also shared how humbled she feels to be seen as an inspiration to other female artistes.

“I’m so grateful because I also took inspiration from [other] people, and I’m sure they’d be proud of me that I’d become that [influential] person. I live to inspire. I think it’s great that people get inspired by me, and I think it’s a crown I’ll have on my head forever – and I take the crown with pride.”
