Don’t impose presidential candidate on NPP for 2024 polls – Boakye Agyarko

Former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko is advising the NPP against imposing a presidential candidate on the party as it prepares to elect a flagbearer to lead it into the 2024 elections.

Leading figures of the party including former campaign manager Boakye Agyarko, Vice President Dr. Bawumia, Trade Minister Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanteng and the Agric Minister Dr. Afriyie Akoto are gunning up to bear the flag of the party going into the 2024 polls.

Mr Agyarko argued that the party has never accepted coronation or imposition, something he described as being against the DNA of the party.

He further indicated that the NPP has a tradition of allowing delegates to elect a candidate of their choice, citing the contest between former President Kufour and then-candidate Nana Akufo-Addo.

“You can go back to be beginning at our tradition, JB Danquah had to contest and he almost lost. Busia had to contest,” he said

“Victor Owusu was contested by the likes of J.H Mensah and Dr. Kwame Sarfo Adu. Prof Adu Boahene was contested by the likes Kodua, Kufour and all of that. Kufour was contested famously by Akufo Addo and Akufo Addo was also contested by Alan Kyeremanteng.”

Mr Agyarko added that “the process must be respected to throw up the leader of the party”.
