Destoolment galore in Asanteman; Asantehene receives plaudits for tackling errant chiefs
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II continues to play it hard on errant chiefs in Asanteman. In less than four months this year, four chiefs have been destooled over various offences that were in variance with the dictates of the stools they occupied.
What some have described as ‘Year of Destoolments’ began on May 29, 2023, when the King destooled the 96-year-old Antoahene , Nana Kwame Owusu Agyeman, over a number of charges including multiple sale of land.
Then on June 8, 2023, he destooled Nana Nketia Boampong II, the Chief of Kwaso near Ejisu for bribery and other offences.
His Majesty struck again on Thursday, August 10, 2023 when at the Kumasi Traditional Council meeting at the Manhyia Palace, he destooled the chief of Abodom near Bekwai, Nana Osaforo Koto II for committing 20 offences including sale of farmlands for illegal gold mining (galamsey).
The fourth destoolment also took place at the Kumasi Traditional Council meeting on Monday, August 14, 2023 when the King adjudged the Nkonsonhene, Nana Osei Tiri Ababio stool vacant. Nana Osei Tiri Ababio II also lost his position as Aduamoahene . A number of people have praised the King for plying it hard of errant chiefs in his Kingdom.
Ruling
Delivering his ruling on the 4th destoolment, Otumfuo said, because he and the former chief were childhood friends , the chief took his leniency to be his weakness .
”You have abandoned the traditional stools untrusted under your care at Kotei. You failed to even go to perform traditional rites there, and I knew all that. I wanted to help you to die on the stool but it’s clear that you don’t want to die on the stool so leave the stool’,” Otumfuo told him.
On those words, the traditional sandals of Nana Osei Tiri Ababio II were immediately removed to signify his destoolment .
