Daddy Lumba’s One-Week: UG Sports Stadium to Host Thousands on Saturday, August 30

The nation is preparing for a massive turnout this Saturday, August 30, 2025, when the one-week observation for highlife legend Daddy Lumba takes place at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Accra.

Born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, the music icon passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Bank Hospital in Accra after a short illness. His family formally announced his death later that day, sparking grief across Ghana and beyond.

In the weeks that followed, tributes poured in from every corner of society. Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, sitting President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and leading figures from both the NDC and NPP all paid homage to the late musician. Ghanaian music greats such as Kojo Antwi, Amakye Dede, and the Tagoe Sisters, alongside younger artistes, actors, actresses, and business leaders, also joined in honouring his legacy.

Ahead of the one-week ceremony, Daddy Lumba’s family visited the Chief of Staff, Hon. Julius Debrah, at the Jubilee House on Monday, August 25, to officially inform government of his passing. Speaking on behalf of the presidency, Mr. Debrah disclosed that former President John Dramani Mahama shared a special bond with the late singer.

“The President loved Daddy Lumba’s songs. When he sits in his car and sings along, you’d be amazed — so this is a great loss to us all,” Mr. Debrah said. “I can’t sing like that, so you can see there was a special connection.”

He further noted that Daddy Lumba’s music carried deep emotional weight for many Ghanaians, accompanying them through both joyful and sorrowful moments. “His artistry transcended generations, leaving an indelible mark on Ghana’s cultural heritage,” he added.

The upcoming one-week is anticipated to draw a massive crowd, reflecting the overwhelming support witnessed during the national candlelight vigil held at Independence Square a week after his passing. That vigil attracted thousands of mourners locally and abroad, with simultaneous tributes held in countries including the UK, Germany, the US, and the Netherlands.

Saturday’s memorial is therefore expected to be another major moment of reflection and celebration of the man whose songs like Theresa, Aben Wo Ha, and Ohia Asem became timeless anthems. Fans, colleagues, politicians, and admirers are all expected to gather at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium to honour a true giant of Ghanaian music.
