Big day for NPP tomorrow: All set for election of flag bearer; Aspirants pledge to accept results

The stage is set, and tomorrow across the 275 constituencies, more than 200,000 delegates of the New Patriotic Party ( NPP) will elect the flag bearer of the party for the 2024 General Elections.
After a heated campaign period, the candidates, in a rare show of oneness and party loyalty, sat around a common table in Accra on Thursday, November 2, 2023, and in the presence of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the National Council of Elders pledged to accept the results of the election and to put the interest of the party first .
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor delievered a speech via zoom to the meeting asking the aspirants to put party interest first.
Aspirants sign undertaking
All the four aspirants – Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Addai Nimoh, and Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto appended their signatures to a document that seeks to ensure party unity ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, the General Secretary of the party, Justin Frimpong Koduah, said, “We were able to get all the four aspirants to sign an undertaking and in summary, they are to accept the primary results, and promote peace and cohesion”.
He said those who will not win have pledged not to resign from the party and they will rather support the winner of the primary.
He further indicated that the aspirants also agreed to “ensure and enforce mechanisms that have been established by the party and also work within the timelines and duration that have been established by the party from now till the results are declared and to respect the decision of the delegates of our party.”
Selfish interests
Before the start of the meeting, the Chairman of the Council of Elders, Hackman Owusu-Agyeman expressed deep concern about the murky nature of the campaign.
He emphasized that disunity is creeping into the party as a result of the selfish interests of some individuals.
According to him, it is not proper for the flag bearer race to degenerate into disruptive disagreements among supporters of the aspirants.
Consequently, he urged the aspirants to do away with divisiveness and stay united after the primary.
Real showdown
One of the four aspirants, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has sworn to give lead contender, Dr MahamuduBawumia a“ showdown “ but to the greater number of party faithful, the real showdown will be in the outcome of the polls, which undoubtedly, will go in favour of the Vice President.

Who will vote ?

The delegates, who make up the Electoral College comprise Members of Parliament, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, ministers and their deputies, foundation members of the NPP, members of the party’s National Council and patrons and council of elders.


The rest are regional party officers, constituency officers, constituency patrons, constituency elders, electoral area coordinators, polling station executives, overseas branches and members of Tescon, the tertiary students’ wing of the party.
