Baffoe-Bonnie to Retire Dec. 20 After 398 Days; He Will Become Ghana’s Shortest-Serving Chief Justice

Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has announced that he will retire from office on December 20 this year, his 70th birthday. His tenure will be the shortest in Ghana’s history, after that of Justice Edward Kwame Wiredu.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, a native of Goaso, was sworn into office by President John Dramani Mahama on November 17, 2025. By the time he retires, he will have spent 398 days in office. Justice Wiredu, by contrast, spent 599 days in office.
Mandatory Retirement
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie announced his mandatory retirement during activities marking the opening of the 69th Legal Year, where he reflected on leadership, institutional continuity, and the responsibility of those entrusted with the administration of justice.
Speaking at a reception at the Supreme Court forecourt after a commemorative church service, he stressed that the Judiciary is an institution that extends beyond the tenure of any individual office holder.
He observed that judicial leaders inherit an institution built by others, contribute their part to its development, and eventually hand it over to the next generation.
