Greater Accra Chiefs Seek Asantehene’s Help to Resolve Chieftaincy Disputes

In a significant move to address longstanding traditional conflicts, the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs has formally sought the intervention of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to help resolve the numerous chieftaincy disputes in the region.

The proposal was presented on January 30, 2026, when a delegation from the House, led by its President, Oboade Notse Odaifio Welentsi III (who is also the Nungua Mantse), paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene at the Manhyia Palace.

Successful record
Citing Otumfuo’s successful record of adjudication and mediation in other parts of the country, particularly in the north, the Regional House proposed the formation of a special Dispute Resolution Committee to be spearheaded by the Asantehene.

“We want to constitute a committee with Otumfuo to adjudicate chieftaincy disputes in the Greater Accra Region,” stated Odaifio Welentsi III.
“Otumfuo has resolved chieftaincy disputes in the northern part of the country, and so those of us here who are near can also benefit.”

Laying the philosophical groundwork for the alliance, the Nungua Mantse referenced the adage, “If you want to be great, affiliate with great men.”

He further justified the appeal by highlighting the unique constitutional status of the Asantehene, which distinguishes him from other paramount chiefs. “The constitutional statement, ‘Paramount chiefs and the Asantehene,’ makes Otumfuo distinguished, and that is why we are here to seek his assistance.”

Investment
Beyond dispute resolution, the delegation also sought collaboration to attract investment.
Noting the Asantehene’s extensive global networks, Odaifio Welentsi III requested his leadership in bringing investors to develop the vast, untapped lands within the Greater Accra traditional areas.

“With Otumfuo’s global affiliation, he is the best to lead us to go get investors to develop industries.
Prampram and Ningo have vast land that can be used to undertake developmental projects, while dealing with the indiscriminate sale of land,” he said.

The high-level delegation included:
· Nene Tetteh Wakah III, Vice President of the Greater Accra House of Chiefs;
· Nene Osroagbo Djangmah XII, Paramount Chief of Ningo Traditional Area;
· Gbetsoolor Nii Ashitey Akomfra III, Paramount Chief of Teshie; and
· Tatse Nii Laryea Akuetteh X, the Paramount Chief of Katamanso.
