Ivor Agyeman-Duah to Speak on ‘Ghana and Gold’ at New York Conference

The pivotal role of gold in Ghana’s economic growth and its rich cultural history will take center stage at a major conference organized by the U.S. based Initiative in Art and Culture (IAC) this week.
Being held at New York City’s Bohemian National Hall, the three-day event, titled “Eye on the Prize,” begins on Sunday, July 13, with a dedicated focus on “Ghana and Gold,” celebrating the nation’s global prominence in gold production.
The conference will bring together gold investors, assayers, bullion producers, regulators, and industry leaders, including representatives from The World Jewelry Confederation, The World Gold Council, the World Bank, Newmont, Heritage Auctions, AngloGold Ashanti, Rio Grande (New Mexico), and mining-focused universities. The gathering comes at a time of heightened global interest in gold as a secure asset for nations and financial institutions.
Ghanaian historian and development specialist Ivor Agyeman-Duah, will deliver the Keynote Address, titled “Ghana and Gold: Path of the Antill.
Dr. Lisa Koenigsberg, IAC’s founding president, highlighted Agyeman-Duah’s unique expertise as a central bank historian, museum economist, and consultant on multilateral World Bank projects, particularly in the restitution of ancient gold artifacts.
His address will precede panel discussions, including one on “Retaining Greater Value In-Country: Strategic Approaches,” featuring:
– Brad Brooks-Rubin, former Senior Advisor, Office of Sanctions Coordination, U.S. Department of State
– Shari Cittleman, Senior Director, Newmont
– Lucian Simmons, Head of Legal Operations, AngloGold Ashanti
– Jassi Munanka, Director, Research Center for Responsible Mining, University of São Paulo
– Brecken Branstater, Editor-in-Chief, Gemworld International.
Dr. Koenigsberg emphasized that the conference theme reflects the need to navigate political, economic, and technological challenges while preserving cultural heritage and ethical practices in the precious metals and jewelry sectors.
The event will also honor industry leaders with the IAC’s Award for Responsible Practice in Jewelry Leadership (recognizing ethical sourcing) and the 5th Award for Extraordinary Contributions to the Diamond and Jewelry Business, among others.
