16 perish in crash at Akim Asafo, others in critical condition

A crash between two KIA Granbird buses at Akim Asafo on the Accra-Kumasi highway has left 16 persons dead. The passengers from both vehicles comprising 13 males and 3 females died on the spot. According to the police, the unfortunate incident happened at about 1:30am on Friday.

The driver of Kia Granbird bus heading toward Kumasi attempted to overtake leading to head-on with another Kia Granbird bus which was coming from Kumasi. Several passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Suhum Government Hospital for treatment.

The deceased persons were removed from the scene and also sent to the Suhum Government Hospital mortuary for preservation, identification and autopsy. The Suhum Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD), District Police Patrol team and Kibi MTTD Police Command were also at the scene directing traffic.

Officers from the Ghana National Fire Service and Abundance Services from Suhum, Bunso, Kibi and Ayensuano were on hand to assist the police. The buses involved in the crash were eventually towed from the scene to aid vehicular traffic flow.
