Mahama’s silence on Buhari’s death fuels speculation of strained ties

The silence of President John Dramani Mahama on the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has sparked speculation about a strained relationship between the two leaders.

The issue was raised by NPP activist Sir Obama Pokuase, who described himself as a concerned citizen, in a Facebook post on Tuesday—the day Buhari was buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.

Questions
In his post, Sir Obama pressed for clarity, writing: “Your Excellency, respectfully, following the passing and burial of Nigeria’s former President, H.E. Muhammadu Buhari—observed across the region today, 15th July 2025—many have awaited condolence messages from Ghana’s leadership. Yet, as of this hour, there appears to be no public statement from you or Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa acknowledging this significant moment for Nigeria and West Africa.”

He continued: “In the interest of diplomacy and good governance, I respectfully seek clarification: Has a private message of condolence been conveyed? Such gestures reinforce ties between our nations and exemplify African solidarity. A public statement would not only honour the late statesman but also dispel rumors of past tensions between your government and the late Nigerian leader.”

Sir Obama stated that the absence of an official response has left observers questioning whether the silence reflects deeper diplomatic friction.
